Nutrition - Children Ensuring that children, not to mention small children eat a balanced healthy diet is easier said than done. When a child reaches around nine months of age they often develop a strong desire to eat the same as their parents. This is a very important part of a child's development because they will begin to imprint your health patterns. If you're offering your child healthy foods whilst you are eating junk foods, it simply will not work. You may notice that even if a child doesn't like a food, they will want to eat it simply because you are eating it as children desire to imitate. Unfortunately many of us have unhealthy eating habits that we have picked up over the years. Having a child
is a good opportunity to abandon these bad habits and develop some new good ones. Due to our parental instincts, we find it easier to do something good for our children rather than ourselves. By changing and making our diet healthy for ourselves we are also benefiting our children as they will follow the examples we set them. Children will also become healthy and energetic both at present and in the years to come. When you child becomes interested and wants on your plate, make sure that you are eating fresh fruit and vegetables and plenty of whole grains. Make sure you are offering something healthy for your child to taste. Make sure that your toddler's foray into adult foods is not crisps, French fries or sugary treats. However, you should bear in mind that toddlers will wish to eat foods that you don't like or eat. They are individuals so will have their own taste preferences. Always remember the power of limitation and the fact that we can not give a child something that we done have When you provide your child with a balanced healthy diet, you are providing them with the nutrients that are essential for a healthy long lasting future. Toddlers and preschool children are very often picky eaters. As they grow their taste buds will change and eventually they will start to eat a more balanced diet. You should increase whole foods in your child's diet without being worried that they are not receiving enough vitamins to help them grow strong and healthy. Be prepared for a battle. Ensuring that your child is eating a balanced healthy diet is not easy. It requires patience, creativity and a lot of example setting. Unfortunately due to food companies advertising highly processed 'fun foods' through the media and peer pressure, our battle to ensure that are children are eating healthy is only harder. It must be remembered that this battle is worthwhile. Always remember that you should not battle with your child or push them too hard as it will backfire. Remember that you are battling with bad nutrition. Use persuasion, set examples and provide them with lessons on what is healthy and what is not.
