The 5 Food Groups
The different kinds of food that we eat all form part of the 5 Basic Food Groups:
1. Grains and Cereals: such as bread, rice, cereal, and pasta 2. Fruit and Vegetable Group 3. Dairy: such as milk, yogurt, and cheese 4. Proteins: such as meat, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts. 5. Fats and Oils
These 5 Food Groups are often drawn as within triangle or pyramid structure as follows:

This diagram is useful because it shows how much of each of these different food groups you need to eat to stay healthy. The grain and cereal foods make up the base (the widest part) of the pyramid, and these should form the bulk (the biggest part) of your diet. As you move up the pyramid, the pyramid gets skinnier, and the food groups higher up should form a lower proportion of your diet. Fats and Oils (at the top of the pyramid, where it is skinniest) should form the smallest proportion of your diet.
